The Platy is probably one of the most popular beginner fish, which is so in the various Aquaristikläden. No wonder. Is his attitude quite undemanding and the nature of Platys also quite peaceful. So that it can be sociable with other fish species. But this also often leads to the question of new fighting fish owners asking if the Platy would not be a great compliment to your fighting fish.
No he is not.
I can only emphasize it again and again. Your fighting fish are loners! Of course, the friendly salesman in the Zooladen – in most cases – will tell you something else. And also on the internet you will come across stories where the socialization of Platy and fighting fish worked out, but as a rule you should refrain from it.
As already said, your Betta is a loner. And which of the sensitive kind. Sensitive especially against stress. And that is precisely what is triggered by the socialization with other fish. Any kind of stress can significantly shorten the life of your Betta. Also an ugly side effect of the stress: The fighting fish hides somewhere in the aquarium.
There is another important point about the stress factor. And that of the fact that Platys belong to the Flossenzupfern. That means they go to the long fins of your fighting fish and pluck at it. Which can then lead to injuries (and also fungal infections) of the fin.
So my conclusion: leave it. Give your fighting fish a nice aquarium of 25 – 30 liters in volume, put a few beautiful snails to the Betta and enjoy the uniqueness of these fish in a species-appropriate environment.
