Budgerigars are usually kept as household pets. In addition, some breeders may turn this into a source of enjoyable profit by breeding budgerigars. You should determine the number of birds, the size of the cage, the size of the cage, the shape and characteristics of the accessories according to the reason for getting budgerigars. However, whatever the purpose, there are the points that need to be taken into consideration when keeping budgerigars. Consider the following in detail.
What should be careful when buying a budgerigar?
1. You should carefully choose the place where you buy your birds.
When budgerigars and other pets are weaned and old enough to be separated from their mothers, they are distributed for sale by the breeders. Here, until the buyer purchases a bird or pet, the animals may wear out if they stay in small cages for long periods of time. So if there are people in your circle who have breeding birds among your friends or relatives, contact them. If you have chicks, it will be healthier to pick up from your acquaintances.
But if you can not find any in your area and you have decided to buy it from a Pet Shop, first make sure that the store is neat and clean, then the cage where the bird lives, the food and water containers are clean.
2. Take care that the budgerigar is healthy.
It is not difficult to distinguish whether budgerigars are diseased or not. A healthy budgie is active. It keeps flying from one perch to another, making all kinds of movements and noise. Stand upright. The feathers clean, orderly and complete. Their eyes are bright, alert to their surroundings. The digestive and excretion system is organized. The stools under the cage are an important clue to our health for us. Very solid hard stools as well as watery ones are symptoms of the disease.
Green color and wet stools are diarrhea, while solid stools are constipated.
Constant diarrhea and constipation lead to intestinal inflammation. It is necessary to avoid buying such birds. It is impossible to know which bird belongs to the faeces since the budgerigars are sold in bulk to pet shops. That’s why we need to be wise in our choices. The vent must be clean with no stool residue around the feathers.
Birds with runny, sore, nasal obstruction, or weeping eyes are kept in the cold or in the nose. If the chiller is excessive, elongate conditions may be encountered. In addition, since the common cold is an infectious disease, bird breeders should be able to distinguish birds from other birds as well as birds.
The bird’s beak, the fleshy part (cere), feet, and nails should also be carefully examined. It is known that parasites known as scalyface mites can live under the skin of budgies. It shows itself in the form of flaky crusty areas on the face and feet. The treatment should not be difficult but the bird should not be bought from a cage where this easily transmitted disease is seen.
The skin should not have redness. Blow into the feathers of the birds to see this. If there is redness, this is an indication of the disease.
3. Take care that the budgerigar is young.
The budgerigars are getting mature at an early age. It is possible to breed a five month old budgerigar. But the use of birds of nine months old and seven years old in production is objectionable. Manufacturers aiming to produce should pay attention to the age factor.
Budgerigars gain some skills at an early age more easily, such as getting close to the owner, speaking, handling, eating elusive food. As their age progresses, they gain tension and forgetfulness. Because of this, young budgerigars should be preferred.
It is easy to distinguish budgerigar chicks from adult ones. The lines on the head of the baby budgerigars are more frequent than adults. As the budgerigars get older, these lines on the head disappear over time.
As you can see in the pictures, the front part of the head is clean and the back part is striped. In juveniles, these lines are often seen to the front. Another difference is the eyes.
The eyes of little budgies for four months are black. Iris rings of the eyes towards the sixth month are gray. As you approach the eighth month, light gray rings appear around your eyes. Eight months old rings around the eyes of big budgerigars become more visible and whiter.
4. Choose the color of budgerigar:
You will get it to eat at home, and there is no harm in choosing the color of budgerigar so that it will appeal to your taste. However, if it is desired to obtain qualified offspring for production, birds of the same color should be mated. It will be very helpful for us to read about the breeding of budgerigar for a more knowledge and advanced production.
5. Choosing budgerigar sex:
In the budgerigar, the choice of gender is again chosen. But there are significant differences between male budgerigars and females. Some of those;
Male budgerigars are more active than females.
Females are more aggressive than males.
The boys are more cunning, they shake their heads. In the females it is the opposite.
The males have the ability to memorize up to about 100 words. This number is less in the female
